Again, sound familiar? Like, none. Molly should not let him anywhere near a swiping app on her phone. Austin was shitty, but he was also easily disposed of by the story and by the characters, which made little sense to me the more I thought about it. At the same time, Molly and Austin had been married for long enough that his death and betrayal should have had more of an impact on Molly. They met, they had a romance of some sort, they got married, they grew older together….

That amounts to something. Again, insufficiently supported by the text and altogether too convenient. There are spells and attack methods — mind cages? Neither are the magical rules of the world. Molly spends considerable time learning about magic, her strengths, and her ability to cause a satisfying level of destruction, but there is no detail about any of it. I wanted more detail about what her magic is, where it manifests, how she identifies her strengths, what her training is like — all of that.

I know a lot about the first part. She flips cars, tosses her cheating husband around, explodes vases. But in the latter part of the story, she falls into this caregiver role with very little explanation, and she is of course the very greatest one at helping people heal. I just wanted the first Molly back. He too starts out more complicated and then gets swallowed by the plot. I wish this had been a slow burn and I just did not care about the big bad and the magical battle at the end.

They have kick ass heroines, super powerful alpha and occasionally alphahole heroes who can keep up with the heroines, and a liberal dousing of crazy sauce. But ooohhh yeah, so much crazy sauce. I loved this book a whole lot, probably an A- for me, and I already want to re-read it. Still, the first half of the book more than made it worth the read for me. I love Thea Harrison and she is an auto buy for me. Her biggest adversary is the mysterious Wizard from the High Council of Magic who both advises Molly how to find her parents and places obstacles in her path.

I found this a bit confusing. When the wizard is first introduced, he tells Molly how her parents can be rescued and I initially thought that he was one of Molly's allies, but by the end of the book, it is clear he is not. In the letter from the High Council that Molly receives at the end of the book, she is described as a "worthy opponent".

  • It is just not clear to me why her parents were kidnapped in the first place and just who is the "good guy" and who is the "bad guy". I realize that The Magic Maze is the first book in the series and that it represents the first part of the task, so I'll just have to read the next books to seek further clarification. I'm good with that!

There are so many unpredictable twists that will keep you guessing what will happen next. Feb 10, A. Born the child of a High Witch and a Magician who uses real magic, Molly Miggins lives in an enchanted world many would envy. They actually do vanish! But, for this purpose Molly m Born the child of a High Witch and a Magician who uses real magic, Molly Miggins lives in an enchanted world many would envy. But, for this purpose Molly must become a witch. The wizard issues Molly with a deadline to complete her task. To add to this mixed bag of fortune, at the Academy she is given a crooked wand, which proves quite difficult to aim when casting spells. Without spoiling it, that is as far as I can go, but I can tell you it is certainly worth reading the whole story. Mr Forest seems to have an inherent aptitude for connecting with his young readers.

The story has bags of humour and the narrative is well-constructed. A lesson is subtlety thrown in here. All in all, a fun and entertaining read. This great little story about a young witch and what happens after the sudden disappearance of her parents during a magic show has all the elements of a good story including, a naughty rival for the young witch, a new best friend, a mysterious Wizard, a wonky wand, a bent pointy hat and an ancient Granny with an unpredictable Flying Broomstick - what could POSSIBLY go wrong!

This is a fun story of Molly, a young witch-in-the-making. When her parents perform a magic trick and disappear into the 'Void' Molly learns that it will be up to her to begin her magic career early in order to save them. There are some great characters including Henrietta Havelots, the spoiled, rich kid who will do anything to upset Molly's plans.

This is the first in a series and so the whole story is not resolved at the end of the book. That did not detract from the enjoyment of the book thou This is a fun story of Molly, a young witch-in-the-making. That did not detract from the enjoyment of the book though it wasn't quite clear why Molly's parents had disappeared, maybe that will be explained later down the line. The illustrations might have been better displaying a bit larger on the kindle. Blyton with knobs on.
